Ants are social insects of the family Formicidae. Ants evolved in the mid-Cretaceous period between 110 and 130 million years ago. As of 2015, about 12,500 species of ants have been classified. The total estimated number of species is 22,000. Ants have elbowed antennae and the distinctive node-like structure that forms their slender waists. Ants form colonies that range in size from a few dozen to millions of individuals. Ant societies have division of labour, communication between individuals, and an ability to solve complex problems. Ants are found on all continents except Antarctica. Ants range in size from 0.75 to 52 millimetres. The largest species of ants were extinct, which is fossilized, called Titanomyrma giganteum, the queen of which was 6 centimetres long with a wingspan of 15 centimetres.
